Knowing Your Audience

It goes without saying that you need to know your audience to deliver an effective presentation. After all, they say “different strokes for different folks”. Different folks will resonate differently to the same ‘material’.

Do you actually know your audience?
Perhaps, the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’. Or perhaps a doubtful ‘Maybe’.
Either way, the conventional wisdom has it that you need to tailor your message to the targeted audience so that these people actually receive the message. Be it a large demographic or pehaps a very small interest group.

Do the audience know what they like?
Most likely, they do. If we take this concept into a different context, say, let us assume that the targeted audience is your (potential) customers and the message that you are about to deliver is your product… Now, if you ask them then they might give you some reference. But, hey, just like what Ford told us years ago: if I asked my customers they would have told me to build faster horse cart..

In the final analysis..
I have personally tried both paths i.e. product centric and customers centric..
To tell the truth, so far customer centric approach always won hands down. With that, always be ‘all ears’ to your customers’ needs.
